How Does Pet Care Work After the Death of an Owner?

If you’re a pet owner, it can be sensible to consider what will happen to your furry friend after you pass away. That way, you know they’re provided for, no matter what may happen.

Who is responsible for a pet after its owner dies?

In much the same way that belongings can be bequeathed in a will, so too can a pet. Pet owners may express a wish for someone to care for their pet after their death.

However, the person who has been named to take care of the pet is not legally bound to do so.

What are the options for pet care after its owner’s death?

There are three main options for pet care after an owner’s death.

Friends or family

It’s possible that the pet owner will have requested for a friend or family member to take on ownership of the pet once they have passed. This may have been formalised in a will, or merely been verbally agreed during the individual’s life.

Private rehoming

In instances where the named individual feels like they can’t look after the pet that has been left to them, they can privately rehome it.

Rehoming the pet at an animal shelter

If there are no family or friends who are either willing or able to take the pet on or privately rehome it, animal shelters can help.

In fact, many have schemes in place that owners can sign up to before they die. With these schemes, the animal shelter will take full responsibility for the pet.

There are various UK-wide schemes that pet owners can sign up to. The RSPCA has a Home for Life scheme for a variety of animals. Dogs Trust has its Canine Care Card for dogs, and The Cats Protection League has a Cat Guardians Card. Battersea Dogs & Cats Home also has a Forever Loved Service and Blue Cross has a Pet Peace of Mind service.

How do I make provisions for my pet in my will?

If you’ve found a friend or family member who’s willing to take on your pet after your death, you can detail this in your will.

You can even leave a financial bequest for them to help cover the costs of vet bills, insurance and daily upkeep. Alternatively, you can leave these funds in the form of a discretionary trust. Usually, the pet’s new owner will then be able to use this money as they see fit.
